Final Project Proposal

Introduction

  • In Pittstown, NY, a centuries-old cemetery has just acquired new land directly adjacent to it. They want to expand their cemetery into this new parcel of land but in order to be able to sell plots to people, they need a way to map the land to see how best the cemetery can be laid out.

Objectives

  •  My task is to create a map that shows where each plot should be placed in relation to each other the physical boundaries. There are specific dimensions of each kind of plot broken down by the number of graves meant to be placed in it as well as other rules about how far away the plots should be from each other. These plots also need to be accessible to the community so there is a need to have a road that runs through the cemetery.

Layers to be used:

  • Areal photograph
  • Rensselaer parcels map

Methods
  • Polygons to show the size and placement of each type of plot
  • Use the survey map as a guide to trace the boundary onto the map project
  • Use labeling tool to label 4-person, 2-person, and single plots
  • Polygon to show the placement of the road through the cemetery
Deliverability
  • The map is intended to be used only by the cemetery board for planning and record-keeping. The public will not have access to this map so it mainly serves as a tool to show where each new grave should be placed once sold.

Work Plan
  • Oct 29-Nov 4: Plan out how each layer will be useful
  • Nov 5-11: Start trying different layouts of the cemetery
  • Nov12-18: Create multiple draft maps of possible layouts to present to Lisa
  • Nov 19-25: Check in with Lisa and get suggestions on what else might be needed
  • Nov 26- Dec 2: Finalize map and get feedback from classmates and Dr. M
  • Dec 3-9: Turn in the finalized map

I no longer believe that I need to physically go to the cemetery in order to create this map. With the survey map I was given, I have all the information that I could hope to attain by going there to take GPS points of boundaries.
