Final Reflections

Image
My final maps and poster are very good in my opinion. My map specifically looks very well organized and the grid makes it look like it is well thought out. My poster is well organized and I convey a lot of information in a small space. I like that I show pieces of the project from earlier in the semester because it gives the viewer an idea of what it took to make the finished product. The only thing I really dislike is that I was unable to fit in a large scale image of the whole cemetery.  If I were to restart this project over again, I would do most things the same. I only wish I knew about the grid tool earlier and that you can snap to the grid if you move the copy-pasted feature directly above the original. This would have made this project much faster to complete.  During this project, I utilized the create feature class and edit tools. I ended up getting really good at manipulating features. This will be helpful if I complete another project where I need to create my own ...

Blog Post 3: Draft Maps

Image
Since my last post, I've made a lot of progress. I've georeferenced the survey image onto the imagery map and created feature layers for the current and new cemetery boundaries. I've made a couple of drafts that show different methods of laying out the cemetery with all of the restrictions that have been imposed.  The most surprising aspect of my project so far has been the amount of thought I've had to put in the design. I feel responsible for making the layout as functional and sensible as possible because they want to get the most space out of their new purchase as possible. Plus it has to be visually pleasing. The hardest part of this project has been figuring out how to use the space economically. The parcel runs diagonally, but the plots all have to be aligned to face East. If the plots could run parallel to the sides of the property, most of the space could be used. Since they cannot, space will unfortunately be wasted. They also want a road that runs through t...

Project Updates

Currently, this is the appearance of my map. I have an areal photograph basemap and the land parcel data of Rensselaer County. Once I am able to geo-reference the image of the cemetery survey (below) onto the map and correctly place it, my job becomes much easier because I can then be sure I have the correct area and dimensions of the cemetery. With that completed, I will be able to make polygons that show where each plot will go. I will also map out where the wetland part of the cemetery is to make it clear what areas are unusable.

Final Project Proposal

Introduction In Pittstown, NY, a centuries-old cemetery has just acquired new land directly adjacent to it. They want to expand their cemetery into this new parcel of land but in order to be able to sell plots to people, they need a way to map the land to see how best the cemetery can be laid out. Objectives  My task is to create a map that shows where each plot should be placed in relation to each other the physical boundaries. There are specific dimensions of each kind of plot broken down by the number of graves meant to be placed in it as well as other rules about how far away the plots should be from each other. These plots also need to be accessible to the community so there is a need to have a road that runs through the cemetery.  Layers to be used: Areal photograph Rensselaer parcels map  Methods Polygons to show the size and placement of each type of plot Use the survey map as a guide to trace the boundary onto the map project Use labeling tool to label 4-p...

GIS Project Proposal

In Pittstown, NY, a centuries-old cemetery has just acquired new land directly adjacent to it. They want to expand their cemetery into this new plot of land. In order to be able to sell the spaces to people, they need a way to map the land. They need information that will allow them to work with the town and county in reference to drainage, roads, and more.  As a GIS student, I have basic abilities to complete GIS work. As of now, I expect to use the following: Arial photographs of the lot (base map) Polygons detailing where each lot for sale is (created on-site) River and stream layers  (https://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/110m-physical-vectors/) Slope layer (topographic base map) Electric and water lines layer (created on site) Rensselaer parcels map (https://services6.arcgis.com/drkDXByy6E3bYW3a/arcgis/rest/services/rensselaer_county_ny_parcels/FeatureServer/0)  Other layer ideas without data Soil types layer? Roadway layer? I intend to spend time working...
