GIS Project Proposal
In Pittstown, NY, a centuries-old cemetery has just acquired new land directly adjacent to it. They want to expand their cemetery into this new plot of land. In order to be able to sell the spaces to people, they need a way to map the land. They need information that will allow them to work with the town and county in reference to drainage, roads, and more.
As a GIS student, I have basic abilities to complete GIS work. As of now, I expect to use the following:
- Arial photographs of the lot (base map)
- Polygons detailing where each lot for sale is (created on-site)
- River and stream layers
- (https://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/110m-physical-vectors/)
- Slope layer (topographic base map)
- Electric and water lines layer (created on site)
- Rensselaer parcels map
- (https://services6.arcgis.com/drkDXByy6E3bYW3a/arcgis/rest/services/rensselaer_county_ny_parcels/FeatureServer/0)
Other layer ideas without data
- Soil types layer?
- Roadway layer?
I intend to spend time working on what can be done before making a trip there once I am in better contact with those with whom I will be working.
Methods: I plan to use a GPS unit to mark out units on site and import them into GIS. Using symbology, I plan to make a map that the cemetery will be able to use for its own purposes.
Work plan: I will work on putting together a base map with useful layers until the end of October. In the first week of November, I will drive to the cemetery and map the lot.
Deliverability: The map should show each plot that could be sold on the land that has just been purchased. Once there is more communication with the cemetery folks, I will understand my deliverabilities further.
