Project Updates


Currently, this is the appearance of my map. I have an areal photograph basemap and the land parcel data of Rensselaer County. Once I am able to geo-reference the image of the cemetery survey (below) onto the map and correctly place it, my job becomes much easier because I can then be sure I have the correct area and dimensions of the cemetery. With that completed, I will be able to make polygons that show where each plot will go. I will also map out where the wetland part of the cemetery is to make it clear what areas are unusable.

GIS Project Proposal

  In Pittstown, NY, a centuries-old cemetery has just acquired new land directly adjacent to it. They want to expand their cemetery into this new plot of land. In order to be able to sell the spaces to people, they need a way to map the land. They need information that will allow them to work with the town and county in reference to drainage, roads, and more.  As a GIS student, I have basic abilities to complete GIS work. Blog Post 3: Draft Maps

  Since my last post, I've made a lot of progress. I've georeferenced the survey image onto the imagery map and created feature layers for the current and new cemetery boundaries. I've made a couple of drafts that show different methods of laying out the cemetery with all of the restrictions that have been imposed.  The most surprising aspect of my project so far has been the amount of thought I've had to put in the design. I feel responsible for making the layout as functional and sensible as possible because they want to get the most space out of their new purchase as possible. Plus it has to be visually pleasing. The hardest part of this project has been figuring out how to use the space economically. The parcel runs diagonally, but the plots all have to be aligned to face East.
